International Marconi Day, April 25, 2009 0001 UTC to 2359 UTC.
Over 50 Special Event Stations Worldwide taking part. Various Awards Available for confirming 15 of the Special Event Stations.
See web site
W1AA/MSC will take part, representing the Marconi 1901 Nantucket Island Shore Station "MSC".
DX QSL via the bureau, Stateside via W1AA via QRZ.COM please with an SASE.
The island of Nantucket was very much in on the communication action in the first year of the 20th century. In 1901 attempts were being made to link the island
with the mainland by phone. A commercial Spark Gap wireless telegraph station, the FIRST of this type in the country was built, using a 186 foot mast to support the
antenna. It was built in Siasconset on Nantucket Island 23 miles off the coast of Massachusetts. The construction was financed by the New York Herald.
Beginning on August 12, 1901, using the call sign “MSC,"
communication was established with the Nantucket Shoals lightship, 50 miles southeast, and also with
oceangoing steamers. Two weeks later it was up and running, and “MSC” was contacted by the steamship Luciana at sea 237 miles from Sandy Hook, NJ. The Marconi Co.
came back to the island in the fall of 1904 to refit the station with more powerful apparatus.
The value of the wireless was dramatically exhibited in late January of 1909, when the Siasconset “MSC” Nantucket station was instrumental in actually saving many
lives when the steamers Florida and Republic collided during a dense fog 70 miles south of the island.
In September of 1914 the U.S. government closed the Siasconset station for "alleged violation of the neutrality law" and it was reopened the following year,
under the watchful eye and imposed censorship of the government until it closed early in 1918.

W7QF Silent Key
While in the 9th grade of Merchantville (NJ) High School, as a teenager in 1954, I first met Tom Jednacz. Our desks were next to
each other in algebra class. He noticed an SWL card that I had taped to my notebook and asked if I was a ham. Neither of us was,
but together we studied for our Novice license; and two months later in November we passed the test: Tom became KN2JXX and
I was KN2JXW.
We were "best buddies" throughout high school and were often referred to as "Mutt and Jeff" (from the comic strip) because
Tom was 6 ft tall and I was a tad under 5 ft. We compared ourselves to the two characters in the monthly Popular Electronics column that
featured two teenage boys, Carl and Jerry, and their adventures in ham radio.
Tom attended Drexel University and I went to the University of Pennsylvania, only a few blocks away in Philadelphia, PA.
Tom earned his degree in Electrical Engineering while I majored in biological science and English. He became a professional engineer
and I was an English and science instructor in high school and college for 37 years.
We each married, had kids, moved apart, but for 54 years we remained friends and kept in touch by ham radio when Tom's job as
President of Phillips Electronics took him around the world -- Fiji, Japan, et al. I have kept my 1954 call (dropping the "N" for Novice).
When Tom lived on the west coast, he acquired W7QF. The "QF," he said, stood for Quality Fanatic — his primary goal at Phillips.
Tom began suffering from Lupus, and retired to Dunnellon, FL, some years ago where he established the ham station of his dream —
full power, 75 ft tower, top-of-the-line TenTec equipment, 7-element Steppir beam, assorted long-wire and Beverage antennas, all
computer driven with auto-logging. He worked over 300 DXCC countries and was an avid contester. In 2000 Tom and I founded the
ARLHS. He was the first VP and assumed member #0002.
Recently his health took a down-turn, and he began experimenting with massive injected doses of Vitamin C. His disease went into
remission and, with the help of a Florida member of Congress, he took on the drug companies and spearheaded a drive to have the
FDA sanction the mega-Vitamin C treatment. That legislation is still in limbo.
After the Amateur Radio Lighthouse Society Convention in mid-October, I drove from Georgia to visit him in Dunnellon, FL.
We hugged. He told me he thought this would be our last time together. I laughed and responded, "That's what you said the last time
I saw you." Over the next three weeks we talked via landline and on 20 meters. (I use the Icom 756PRO that he gave me as a gift to
celebrate the 50th anniversary of our friendship.)
Tom died on Monday, November 17, at age 68.
It is time to rest your oars, my friend.
Your key is silent now.
C U soon

Jim, K2JXW

ARLHS CONVENTION LEM "GIVE-AWAY"
A new ARLHS “Lighthouse Excursion Module” will be auctioned off at
the Convention in October.
Starting bid will be only ONE dollar.
We decided to auction it rather than give it away as a door prize
because some members may not want to win it and then have to
worry about shipping it home, etc. This way, only those that drove
to the convention or otherwise have a means of getting it home might want to
participate. If uninterested, you don't have to bid.
The ARLHS paid $500 for the LEM, and it has been featured on the web
site for the last month. Click on the “ARLHS LEM” yellow tab to see
the specs, owners manual, two videos of it in operation, etc.
NOTE: You must be present to bid. Highest bid over $1.00 takes it.
Winner takes it with him/her. We can't ship the LEM.
Hope to see you at St. Simons!

Record Number of ILLW Registered Entrants
As of Sunday, August 17th, the ILLW Organization has logged 456 entrants to the ILLW event.
--
The ILLW Organization's team of researchers scours the internet for news of lighthouse activity, codifies that information,
and presents it in table format at http://illw.org/ILLW-2008-list.mhtml .
--
To maintain our list, information is obtained from a variety of sources:
1. The Amateur Radio Newsline
2. DX 425 cluster (and others)
3. IOTA web site
4. ARRL list of special event 1x1 calls
5. Contest reporting web sites
6. E-mails directly to ILLW
7. QST, Lighthouse Digest, and RadCom magazines
8. Notices and press releases
9. Online applications submitted on our event report form
10. The ARLHS web site, and (yes) even ...

All is public information available to everyone. Posting it for wider distribution is not "plagiarism," as some misguided,
misinformed souls would like you to believe. It is factual information and good reporting, based on hard work and long hours,
and we are just reporting what we find elsewhere, much the same as online clusters do. The fact that we have at least 50
more entries than other lists is a tribute to our success and diligence.

Complaint to Top 25 Lighthouse Websites
The ARLHS and the ILLW Organization have requested that their listing on the
Top 25 Lighthouse Websites listing be deleted from the list.
--
Both organizations have removed the blue "voting banner" from their web sites and cite widespread cheating by other
groups as reason for declining to participate any longer in this "popularity contest."
--
Having held the #1 and #2 spots on the list for
several months by virtue of an enthusiastic membership showing its support by voting, the
directors of the ARLHS became suspicious when the "rival" ILLW.net listing jumped over
100 votes in one day. An informed source later revealed that some groups had subscribed to a proxy
and an automatic voting server to boost their ranking on the list. "This is not in the true spirit of ham
radio," said Jim Weidner, President of the ARLHS, "and we decline to be a part of the voting process
as long as it is open to abuse."
--
He went on to urge members to send an e-mail of complaint to the sponsor of the responsible party,
the Ayr Group,
(click link) and to send an e-mail of dissatisfaction and disgust to the
#1 site.

ILLW
We're on the way to a record-breaking weekend, thanks to the combined efforts of the ILLW.org and the ARLHS.
Almost 400 entrants have registered for the annual ILLW event, in spite of efforts by a pirate to
disrupt the plans
set forth by the two organizations that have been involved since 1997 in the event's management. Remember: The
original official web site began with the ARLHS and now resides with the ILLW ORGANIZATION at
http://illw.org . Any other web site purporting to be "official" has "borrowed" (to be polite) our original page.
The ILLW.org site remains as the most complete and informative listing of ILLW participants, giving
Activation Records, ARLHS numbers,
maps and photos, and IOTA cross refs,
plus a plethora of other information. Make it your home for the weekend!

National Lighthouse Day
By Congressional declaration, August 7th is National Lighthouse Day in the United States..
Several lights are holding open house and/or free admission.
This "conveniently" falls within the ARLHS National Lighthouse-Lightship Week
NLLW QSO Party.

ILLW Registrations
The ARLHS and the ILLW Organization have worked very hard to encourage participation in the August 16-17 ILLW event.
We are happy to report that entrants for lighthouse activations now exceed the 300
mark and have every indication of setting a new high point never before achieved under the "old guard."
We thank those who have contributed to the success of our efforts, in spite of obstacles.

Thanks to our Publicity Chairman, Rick, K9WED, for this "heads up."

ARLHS Rebuttal to Rebel Critics
A few disgruntled former members of the ARLHS (and one current member) have chosen to publicly chastise the Society for its involvement in
and support of the forthcoming ILLW. The ARLHS will maintain its support of the ILLW Organization and offers its
recent rebuttal to its detractors with the following information:
1) Without exception, the negative commentators were either one-time members of the ARLHS and were asked
to resign or quit, hence their disgruntled attitude, or they have a vested interest in the faux illw.net.
2) We have written documentation showing that the ARLHS, along with GM4SUC, organized the ILLW in 1997,
well before the 2001 date claimed by VK2CE for his illw.net web site, which, internet records show, was registered
by him in only 2001 after he bolted the ARLHS to form his own group.
3) The ILLW.ORG list of participants has more than 20 addtional registrants over the NET list. Who is copying whom?
4) Listings on the ILLW.ORG list are taken from direct submissions by the participants themselves or from public
information available to anyone on the internet. We resent the insidious implication by MM5PSL (our former European
representative) that we have plagiarized. This is nothing short of libel.
5) The ILLW.ORG site remains the most valid and most referred-to site for the ILLW event, as evidenced by its ranking
on the list of the Top 25 International Lighthouse Sites.
The ARLHS and ILLW.ORG sites consistently rank in the #1 and #2 spots, well above the meager interest shown in the illw.net site.
6) The ILLW.ORG list contains much more information than the faux NET list; for example, for each light activation the
recognized ARLHS number is given, the latitude and longitude coordinates are cited, IOTA references are listed, photos
of the light are given where available, and a Google map showing the location of the light is shown. Now, are these
features something we copied from VK2CE's list? We think not! The invalid VK2CE illw.net list has none of these features.
7) The ARLHS, along with the ILLW Organization will continue to support the ILLW event, in spite of its detractors.
Our almost 1600 paid members worldwide take an active interest in promoting and sponsoring lighthouse restoration
and expeditions, with financial contributions to such groups as the CQ9U activation of the Madeiras Island light (ARLHS MAD-001), the HandiHams group for handicapped hams, and the rehabilitation of numerous lighthouses.
The VK2CE group has done nothing of this sort and is in this only for the glorification of VK2CE. The original ILLW
Organization has been and will remain as the ILLW Organization at http://illw.org.
If you would care to respond, send your e-mail comments to the President.

Princess Anne To Visit Every Scottish Lighthouse
Princess Anne, Queen Elizabeth II's daughter,
is going to visit each of Scotland's lighthouses. When she was five years old, she went to Tiumpan Head Light, Isle of Lewis.
Since then, she has visited most of Scotland's main lighthouses. Princess Anne often refers to herself as a pharologist,
one who specializes in lighthouses.

AUGUST 2 through AUGUST 9, 2008
The annual ARLHS NLLW event for 2008 has been extended to a full week, to be known
hereafter as
"National Lighthouse-Lightship Week." This will include the August 7th date that
has often been regarded as National Lighthouse Day (see posting #23 below). If this new schedule is successful, we will designate
the first week in August, beginning on the first Saturday, from now on as National Lighthouse-Lightship
Week.
Guidelines for this event are posted on the ARLHS web site,
page 3 .

There seems to be a bit of confusion and controversy about what is and what
isn't the official "National Lighthouse Day." A Google search will turn up both
August 2nd and August 7th as the "official" date. I thought we had this resolved a
decade ago when a Scottish ham radio operator, Mike (GM4SUC), and Jim (K2JXW) set
about creating the National Lighthouse-Lightship Weekend (NLLW) for the USA
and Canada and the International Lighthouse-Lightship Weekend (ILLW) for the world.
We're tracking down the discrepancy:
IMPORTANT NOTE:
In 1976, for the Bicentennial, Congress established the first weekend in August as National Lighthouse Weekend.
In that year, 1976, August 7th fell on Saturday. But in 1989, Congress then recognized August 7th as National
Lighthouse Day. That day, August 7th, was the exact 200th anniversary of the creation of the US Lighthouse act in 1789.
It seems that nobody remembered the earlier date in 1976 designating the first WEEKEND in August, with the first
Saturday being National Lighthouse Day.
Following that, in 1996, I took my clue from the earlier 1976 declaration and made our ham radio NLLW
(National Lighthouse-Lightship Weekend) to coincide with the origianl designation of the first WEEKEND,
regardless of what day August 7th fell on.
It seems now that some people and lighthouse organizations havent yet gotten the word ten years later.
Some are sticking with August 7th (which falls on a Thursday this year) as National Lighthouse Day; whereas
others are following the guidelines we established as the first WEEKEND, which is August 2 & 3 this year.
It only makes sense to have the date coincide with a weekend inasmuch as this is the opportunity for families
to use the weekend to visit lighthouses in their area; and, indeed, many lights hold open house on this day,
offering tours and reduced rates.
Here, for example, is an announcement from Fire Island Lighthouse for Agust 2nd:
Fire Island Lighthouse Day.
and another for
Bald Island National Lighthouse Day in North Carolina.
Still other lights are covering both dates, such as several
New England lights that are using the whole week from August 1 thru August 8:
Take your choice, but we will stick with our tradition and ignore the exact date of August 7th:
Spread the word -- in the future, we designate the first WEEK in August each year, beginning on
the first Saturday, as National Lighthouse WEEK
