DEFINITIONS of TERMS
IN USE BY THE ARLHS
ACTIVATION, ACTIVATING A LIGHT:
Placing a radio station at, on, or within a light and establishing communication with another entity.
The radio station must be a legally recognized and licensed entity, not necessarily an amateur radio station, however. If the station is not physically on or within the light, it must qualify under the “Visual Sight Rule,” defined elsewhere in the ARLHS rules.
BASE:
That foundation or physical man-made structure upon which the beacon rests.
This does not include the natural earth or rock formation surrounding the light,
but is rather limited to that material specially man-made, manufactured, and constructed
as the foundation, deliberately placed into position to support the light. It is considered to
be an integral part of the light itself and is indistinguishable from it.
LIGHT, LIGHTHOUSE, LIGHT STATON,
LIGHTSHIP, LIGHT TOWER, and BEACON:
For the purposes of the ARLHS, these terms shall be considered
synonymous and include, but are not limited to, the following:
*Light: a light intended primarily as a nautical navigational aid.
*Lighthouse: a light tower in the form of an enclosed building or a light tower
mounted on top of an enclosed building.
*Light station: a government facility including a light tower and keeper's quarters.
*Lightship: a maritime vessel, either on the high seas or docked, whose primary purpose
was or is to support a nautical navigational beacon of some type.
*Light tower: any fixed structure displaying a light as an aid to navigation.
*Beacon: a light intended primarily as a nautical navigational aid.
HISTORIC:
The term "HISTORIC" refers to a light that no longer physically exists at its original location.
It may have been destroyed by nature or by man, or it may have been moved to another location, but it still serves as an active aid
to navigation (ATON).
If moved to another site as an active aid to navigation (ATON), the new location is given a new and different ARLHS
number. The old, now-empty physical location and its old number are termed or labeled as "Historic" or "Hist."
If the light was moved to a new location and converted to a museum but is no longer an active ATON,
it falls under the category of "Museum." See definition of "MUSEUM" below.
A distinguishing letter or designation (H) will be added to the original number at the old, empty physical location
to signify its historic status.
MUSEUM:
A MUSEUM lighthouse or lightship is a light that has been moved and converted to a museum or attractionfor
display, but it has NOT been recommissioned as an active aid to navigation (ATON), in which case the new location
keeps the ARLHS number of the original physical location (now abandoned), but as a new musueum location it is termed or labeled as
"Museum" or "Mus."
The original, now-empty physical location of the light will be kept on the ARLHS list, or added to the
ARLHS list if not already there, and termed an "HISTORIC" light location.
A distinguishing letter or designation (M) may, at the discretion of the operator, be added to the number for the new site to signify museum status.
A distinguishing letter or designation (H) is added to the original, now-abandoned site to signify its historic status.
(.See definition of "HISTORIC" above.)
MARITIME MOBILE, MARINE MOBILE:
*Maritime Mobile: a radio station aboard a nautical vessel located on the high seas.
*Marine Mobile: a radio station located aboard a nautical vessel, either in motion or docked,
on an inland body of water or one within the continental limits of a sovereign nation or DXCC entity.
NOTE: Both of these are also referred to as /MM or “Mickey Mouse Mobile.”
