ARLHS members will converge on Port Huron, Michigan,
heart of the blue water area, for the 2005 gathering. As
we all know, Michigan rightfully boasts of having more lighthouses
than any other state, and some of the best known of these
beacons are close by. Ft. Gratiot Lighthouse (ARLHS
USA-291) and Huron Lightship (LV-103) (ARLHS USA-394) are
both at Port Huron. Just a short drive away you'll find
Peche Island Range Rear (ARLHS USA-856), Port Sanilac (ARLHS
USA-651), and Harbor Beach (ARLHS USA-365), while Port Austin
Reef (ARLHS USA-658), Pointe Aux Barques (ARLHS USA-615),
Saginaw River Range Front (ARLHS USA-940) and Saginaw River
Range Rear (ARLHS USA-717) are just a little farther up
the road. Talk about activation possibilities!
The historic Thomas Edison Inn (Thomas Edison
was a Port Hurton native) will serve as the convention
headquarters hotel. You can enjoy the peaceful scenery of
the boyhood home of the renowned inventor, including
the picturesque St. Clair River and Lake Huron, frequented
by ocean-going freighters.
Lighthouse author Sharma Krauskopf,
a Michigander who with her husband owns Eshaness Lighthouse
(ARLHS SCO-075) in the Shetland Islands, will be the featured
speaker at the lead-off banquet on Friday night (September
30th). Krauskopf has numerous lighthouse works to her credit,
including Scottish Lighthouses and The Last
Lighthouse in addition to Scotland - The Complete
Guide and Scotland - The Complete Guide and Road
Atlas.
The Saturday (October 1st)
luncheon meeting will feature a speaker from the Great Lakes
Lightkeepers Association. |
